BIOTECanada Statement: Federal Government Moves Forward on Venture and Growth Capital

Published on October 26, 2026

BIOTECanada welcomes the federal government’s latest steps to strengthen Canada’s venture and growth capital market, including moving forward with the Venture and Growth Capital Catalyst Initiative (Growth VCCI) and outlining how its new $750 million Early and Growth Stage Investment Strategy will be allocated.

As our members advance science, develop new therapies and technologies, and build companies that contribute to Canada’s economy, access to investment remains one of the most significant challenges across the life sciences continuum. That challenge has also remained a consistent priority for BIOTECanada, reflected in our pre-budget submissions, our ongoing work with government, and our detailed feedback earlier this year on the design of the Life Sciences stream of Growth VCCI.

The previously announced $200 million Life Sciences stream recognizes the sector’s distinct capital needs. The government has also announced $75 million for pre-seed and seed investment and $675 million for later-and growth-stage investment, alongside efforts to bring more private and institutional capital into Canada’s venture market.

Yet there is still more work to do. BIOTECanada’s 2026 pre-budget submission calls for additional dedicated life sciences support through the $750 million growth vehicle. As the new streams are developed, it will be important to ensure biotechnology companies can meaningfully access this capital, while moving quickly to deploy the dedicated Life Sciences stream.

BIOTECanada looks forward to continuing to work with the Government of Canada and BDC as these programs are developed and implemented. We also thank @Minister Mélanie Joly, @Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, @Finance Canada, and the members of BIOTECanada’s Emerging Company Advisory Board who shared their expertise and helped inform our recommendations throughout this process.
